ABOUT RED CANOE BOOKS
Red Canoe Books was started out of necessity. Our specialist teachers found it extremely difficult to find good quality books for struggling or reluctant readers. Many students in higher grades, for a variety of reasons, have difficulty reading lengthy, more complex novels. A student might have specific learning difficulties such as dyslexia or just be intimidated by thick novels with small print and too many pages.
Our books are designed to fit the needs of older students who are reading at a grade two level. We wanted to provide a series of books that look like the novels their classmates are reading.
All of our novels and the accompanying teacher's guide are written by specialist teachers. These teachers work with children who have difficulties with reading, writing and spelling. Our novels go through a lengthy process before publication. The novels are read by many students who are reading below their chronological age. Feedback from these students is essential and we pay attention to words or phrases they struggle with and then we make changes to the text. It’s essential for us to publish books that kids want to read.
We want to boost the confidence and self-esteem of struggling readers and provide them with a great read.
