About Red Canoe Books

We want to boost the confidence and self-esteem of struggling readers and provide them with a great read.

Our Story

Red Canoe Books was started out of necessity. Our specialist teachers found it extremely difficult to find good quality books for striving readers and English Language Learners. Many students in higher grades, for a variety of reasons, have difficulty reading lengthy, more complex novels. A student might have specific learning difficulties such as dyslexia or just be intimidated by thick novels with small print and too many pages.

Written by Specialist Teachers

Our novels go through a lengthy process before publication. The novels are read by many students who are reading below their chronological age. Feedback from these students is essential and we pay attention to words or phrases they struggle with and then we make changes to the text. It’s essential for us to publish books that kids want to read.

"The best Hi-Lo books my school has purchased. The class set is in a beautifully crafted, sturdy box. My students were engaged with the fast paced, thrilling adventures. The accompanying Teacher's Guide helped to build vocabulary and reinforce literary skills."

  • Mark M. | Ottawa, Ontario

"Finding books for striving middle school readers can be difficult. These books are appealing as they look like age appropriates novels with an easier reading level. My students enjoyed the books immensely and progressed through the accurately levelled series. The Teacher's Guide is an added bonus!"
